{Friday 11th August '06}   Mewling most piteously, redux…

A few screenshots from the development of the project I’ve been working on for the last few weeks, shivering kittens* 2.0, although it won’t be released for a few weeks more…

shivering kittens 2.0 (in-progress) D20-C
D20-C: the game now has a title dialog.

shivering kittens 2.0 (in-progress) D24-B
D24-B: it is not a new feature, but the game now displays the next piece which will be spawned under the control of the player.

shivering kittens 2.0 (in-progress) D30-A
D30-A: again, it is not a new feature, but the game now has a highscores dialog.

shivering kittens 2.0 (in-progress) D33-A
D33-A: as part of the visual polish, snowflakes now fall and flutter gently in the background.

A few screenshots from the development of the project I’ve been working on for the last few weeks, shivering kittens* 2.0, although it won’t be released for a few weeks more…

shivering kittens 2.0 (in-progress) D6-J
D6-J: the game is now playable; this screenshot can’t show it, but the falling blocks – and the piece under the control of the player – now fall much more smoothly (with sub-pixel precision), and the piece under the control of the player also rotates much more smoothly.

shivering kittens 2.0 (in-progress) D7-B
D7-B: it is not a new feature, but the status of the player is now shown.

shivering kittens 2.0 (in-progress) D8-B
D8-B: again, it is not a new feature, but the piece under the control of the player now has a shadow, to make it easier for the player to tell at a glance where the piece under their control is, and what blocks are part of the piece under their control.

shivering kittens 2.0 (in-progress) D17-B
D17-B: the game may now be paused and unpaused, and has a pause dialog.

shivering kittens is a cute little “falling block” puzzle game for Mac OS X, where you must rescue as many kittens as possible before the time runs out – for every kitten you rescue, the time before the inevitable gameover is extended by a few more seconds…

Changes in version 1.4-2 of shivering kittens:

  • the shaded blocks introduced in version 1.4 to make it easier to tell where the blocks will land if you press the “fast drop” key are now turned off by default; to turn the shaded blocks on or off, press the “g” key.

Changes in version 1.4-1 of shivering kittens (16th January 2006):

  • fixed a bug where pressing any key bound to an in-game action to resume playing a paused game would cause that action to occur as soon as the game resumed playing;
  • fixed a bug where the game would immediately jump to the highscore screen on gameover if the player had scored a highscore – the game now politely waits for the player to press a key before proceeding to the highscore screen;
  • moved the shadows projected behind the blocks currently under the player’s control closer to those blocks.

Changes in version 1.4 of shivering kittens (25th October 2005):

  • to make it easier to tell which blocks are currently under your control, shadows are now projected behind the blocks;
  • to make it easier to tell where the blocks will land if you press the “fast drop” key, shaded blocks are now projected where the blocks will land.

Changes in version 1.3-2 of shivering kittens (11th October 2005):

  • a pause key has been implemented – you may now press the “p” key to pause the game (or to resume a paused game.)

Changes in version 1.3-1 of shivering kittens (27th September 2005):

  • the game now quits on command-q, like a game for Mac OS X should.

Changes in version 1.3 of shivering kittens (15th September 2005):

  • a “fast drop” key has been implemented – you may now press the “space-bar” to drop the falling blocks all the way to the bottom of the screen;
  • the falling blocks now fall more smoothly;
  • a “rotate left” key, and an alternative “rotate right” key, have been implemented – you may now press “z” to rotate the falling pieces counter-clockwise, and “x” (or the “up” key) to rotate the falling pieces clockwise;
  • the interface to the game has been improved:
    • the game now displays the next blocks to be “spawned” at the top of the screen;
    • the game now displays the number of kittens rescued at the bottom of the screen;
    • the game now displays the number of kittens rescued in the best “chain” of kittens rescued at the bottom of the screen;
  • the game is now compatible with Mac OS X 10.4.X (“Tiger”)!

Changes in version 1.2-Interim of shivering kittens (25th July 2005):

  • the game now saves your list of highscores – you are scored on the number of kittens you rescue during a game, and the highscores list also saves the length of the best “chain” of kittens you rescued during the game;
  • the “how to play” documentation distributed with the game has been improved;
  • the demo of the game will now open the correct web-page when you quit the game.

Changes in version 1.1 of shivering kittens (21st February 2005):

  • due to popular demand, the difficulty of the game has been lessened;
  • again due to popular demand, you can now rotate pieces counter-clockwise;
  • the time you’ve survived so far is now shown at the top-right of the window.

Version 1.0 of shivering kittens released on 14th February 2005.
